Souvenirs de Toulon

The best souvenirs are memories. These images are my attempt at recapturing the faded, blurred, but somehow still vivid, mental pictures I took in Toulon, France as a student many years ago. I remember my friend Carol telling me how her mother counseled her to take mental pictures of everything she saw in France. We were sitting on the beach in Toulon at the time, staring out at the sailboats. With a Holga and good old fashioned film I tried to recreate my mental pictures – mes souvenirs. I wanted to try to record the effects of time on my memories. The Holga – with all its quirks and imperfections – allowed me to incorporate all the fuzziness and overlapping imagery of my memories with all the years of dreams now all mixed up with those memories. The two – memory and dream – now indistinguishable.

A long and dreary winter has me dreaming of days to come . . . summers past.

The solitary café sitter. Blending into the woodwork, and the artwork. We go to cafes and retreat into our own worlds. Surrounded but alone. -Café Champignon, Chelsea, January 29, 2011

The McGraw Christmas elf, and everyone’s perfect Christmas gift.
Sleeping in the crib Grampa made in 1966 or thereabouts. He made one for my cousin, Amy (Molly’s mom) and one for me.

Take that, Grampa!
Time for a long winter’s nap (after my boxing match with Grampa).
THE NEW YORK TIMES and BBC: Good things come in pairs . . .

Last week (12/25/09) The New York Times featured 4 of my photos and BBC News ran a retrospective on its readers’ galleries since 2003, featuring my photos of street kids in Nairobi and one of my neighbor, Uncle Willy. Even a short write-up on “where I’m at now”. See the links below. Thanks, NYT and Phil Coomes of the BBC!
~The New York Times Lens Blog – Families - The 4 images begin in row 10, column 8.
~BBC News In Pictures – Looking back - “One photographer I … manage(ed) to track down is Sherry Brukbacher whose single image in the gallery mentioned above led to us featuring a longer version of her story on homeless children in Nairobi. . . .” Here is the original BBC gallery on street kids in Nairobi, published in 2003 while I was living and working in Nairobi. BBC News – The Parking Boys of Nairobi.
The only thing I’m NOT happy about is not having updated my website. A long overdue project! BBC was nice enough to include a link to it in the article. I have some work to do! Thanks to anyone who checks out my blog! I actually keep this up to date.

Aine and Steve asked me to photograph their daughter, Amelie, when she was just weeks old (above). A year later we got together for another session.
